Rules of the Competition:


Applications submitted to the Boston Turkish Festival Documentary and Short Film Competition will be accepted until June 1, 2019.  Applications received after June 1, 2019 will not be accepted. The Competition reserves the right to extend the deadline for submissions. 


Application Form will be completed and submitted ON-LINE.

Required documents may be sent by e-mail or via electronic file transfer (e.g. WeTransfer, Google Drive share, etc.).

Copy of the film may be sent via electronic file transfer (e.g. WeTransfer, Google Drive share, etc.) or as a DOWNLOADABLE Vimeo link. YOUTUBE links are NOT accepted because we need to be able to download your film.


Program consists of two parts:

(a) Competition Section;

(b) Non-Competitive Section.

Applicants will mark their selection on the Application Form. The Selection Committee reserves the right to place a film in the non-competitive section which was originally submitted for Competition Section.


Films screened in and around Greater Boston before and after the BTF Competition application deadline will not be accepted to the competition. If screened, the film will be disqualified from the competition.


There is no thematic limitation for submitted films. Competition is open to submissions from all countries.


Maximum running time is 45 minutes for short films and 120 minutes for documentaries.


Production year of a submitted film has to be within the last 2 years from the date of the Competition (2017).

Applications submitted for films produced earlier than two years (2017) may be considered for Non-Competition section.


Each applicant can submit only one film per short film or documentary category.

Prepare all documents required in the application package in electronic format (i.e. PDF, JPG, etc.)

1. One or more still images of the film (high resolution 300dpi)

2. Director's photo (high resolution 300dpi)

3. Film's poster, if available

4. Press material, if available


Acceptable film formats:

MP4 - HD 1920 x 1080p

Only films with English subtitles or in English will be accepted (except films with no conversation).

If DVD or BluRay is mailed for screening, shipping costs to the Competition's mailing address in Boston shall be paid by the applicant, while the return costs will be paid by the Competition.

Screening film copy should arrive in Boston at least two weeks prior to the opening date of the Competition.


Once the competition program is announced, submitted films may not be withdrawn from the Competition (competition or non-competitive sections) and applications can not be cancelled. Once the Competition Program is announced, if a film will be screened in or around Boston before the competition, that film will be automatically eliminated from the Competition.


The Competition prizes are:

Best Documentary
Best Short Film
Audience Award for Best Documentary
Audience Award for Best Short Film

Best Documentary and Best Short Film prizes may be split among multiple competitors.

Throughout the screenings of the Competition, audience will be distributed ballots to vote for the Audience Awards. After the completion of the screenings, ballots will be counted and winners of the Audience Awards will be announced at the same time as the jury awards.

The Competition reserves the right to give additional awards or special mentions to the participating documentaries and short films.


Purpose of this competition is to provide a platform for filmmakers where their films can be viewed by international audience as well as distinguished film critics, editors, and academicians in Boston. For this purpose, every year, around 40 films are screened in the competition program, and therefore, regretfully, filmmakers are not automatically invited to the Festival.


Winners of the Best Documentary and Best Short Film categories may be re-screened at the 19th Boston Turkish Film Festival, which will take place in March/April 2020. By submitting his/her film to the Competition, the applicant commits willingness to abide by these terms and conditions, and those specified in the Application Form. Any issues not clarified by these regulations shall be adjudicated by the Competition Administration.
