Without music, life would be a mistake -- Friedrich Nietzsche

In this documentary where Turkish music’s diversity and its eclectic structure is analyzed through clarinet master Barbaros Erköse’s life, his musical identity has a great importance.  The artist, up until this day, after working with many Turkish classical musicians, not only used his clarinet as an entertainment tool, but also succeeded to use it as a means of self-expression. This incident led to his world wide recognition, his cooperation with many musicians in various countries and his acquaintance with the western music. It is very unfortunate that he is not receiving the attention and appreciation that he deserves in Turkey. The purpose of this film is not to tell the life story an old clarinet virtuoso, but to show an artist who is still efficient and productive.

Barbaros Erköse

Barbaros ErkoseBarbaros Erköse was born in 1936 in Bursa, in a family engaged in music. His father was Hafız Burhan’s lute player. He started playing the clarinet at the age of nine, as a child representing his generation and carrying on the tradition.  At the age twelve, he started taking clarinet lessons from Saffet Gündeğer.

In Ankara, in the Şen Theatres where İsmail Dümbüllü was taking the stage, he started playing the musical overtures before the plays. In 1995 he got through the Ankara Radio exams.  In 1961, he started working at the Istanbul Radio where he had come for an entertainment program.   He accompanied many soloists from Nesrin Sipahi to Zeki Müren. Besides his solo performances which was blending the classical roman music with jazz forms and his album Cazname (jazz poems) having Aegean and Balkan flavors, he fascinated the audiences  with his performances in various albums with acclaimed trombonist Craig Harris and Anouar Brahem, Peter Pannke.
