ABOUT
THE EXHIBIT: by CENGIZ AKDUMAN
"Southeastern Anatolia is one of the most important crossroads of
cultures in Turkey.
It is almost as if it is a region floating with its own wind, between the edges of time... The Southeast is a piece of Anatolia which has blended multiple dimensions, multiple histories, multiple lives in itself...
Resolving history in this region is a difficult puzzle. May be that is the reason why the Southeast, different than many other geographies, displays us the cultural existence of the region in a "magical bottle"... There, what gains continuity is not history but culture...
This region is where the first abstract idea of "god" was formed. It is the biggest conscious advancement of humankind's adventure which began with Adam and Eve. Putting Abraham, Moses, Jesus and later Mohammed behind this conscious jump, they built spiritual castles of "monotheism" in these lands.
In this exhibit, I am trying to give visual hints of such a geography. 45 photographs of the exhibit were taken during my 11 visits to the Urfa / Mardin / Diyarbakir triangle between 1983-2003.
When I was selecting the photographs for this exhibit I gave the priority to the people of the region. I focused my exhibit to all the people of this region, no matter what their roots are or how they worshipped their god..."
